About

You know that your exams have a high impact on your stakeholders and you put considerable effort into creating a strong program. You’ve built some great materials. Now it’s time to address your candidates’ entire experience.

Innovative item types can increase the scope of what you measure, enhancing the value of your exams to your test-takers. Usability can make every aspect of your program more intuitive for your test-takers. And behavioral design can give your stakeholders the right nudges to follow-through on tasks they need to do.

I specialize in bringing creative solutions to my clients, working at the intersection of assessment, learning, and technology to solve intractable problems.

Innovative Item Types

Many exam programs have a problem with important content they simply can’t measure with traditional multiple-choice questions. You can vastly improve the quality of your exam through a thoughtful analysis of these gaps and a systematic plan for addressing them with the right innovative item types. I’ve been helping clients solve these problems for more than 20 years.

Usability

The vast majority of your test-takers’ interactions with you come through a digital screen. When they access your website, receive emails and texts from you, and take the computer-based test you design, they are experiencing you digitally. Your software is a critical extension of your program. When you have good usability, it builds your test-takers’ trust in you, while bad usability causes resentment and mistrust. I help my clients improve their ongoing relationships with test-takers through effective user research and redesigned user interfaces.

Behavioral Design

Do some of your stakeholders have trouble following through? Your test-takers may fail to read important instructions, while volunteer item writers drag their feet on submitting items. These unremitting problems can lower staff motivation and impact your bottom line. I help my clients disentangle the underlying causes and execute powerful solutions to these persistent challenges.
